The cross resulting in 'Cortland' was made by S.A. Beach at the Geneva Experiement station in 1898, which germinated in 1899. The seedling was selected as "New York 79" in 1911 and introduced in 1915. Great for eating, apple sauce, and a NY apple variety that is better suited for our climate than it's parent 'Macintosh'
