Smokehouse

Place of Origin:  Millcreek, Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, PA

Year: 1836

Parentage:  Chance seedling, believed to be offspring of 'Vandevere'

Uses: Cooking, Baking

History at Three Springs: Originally planted in the 1960's, replanted for market in 2016

Originating as a seedling nearest to William Gibbons' smokehouse, this is a really fun variety with great PA history. A nice apple for baking purposes, this apple is also a great eating apple for those who enjoy a tart apple as a snack. The flavor is bright and punchy without being austere. It was an apple growing on very old, dying trees when we first started going to markets. When those trees were removed, we had a few customers lament the lack of Smokehouse. Turns out, we missed them too! We're happy to have this PA heirloom back in production.
