Granny Smith

Place of Origin:  (formerly) Eastwood, (presently) Ryde, NSW, Australia

Year:  1860’s

Parentage:  Seedling, Parent variety most commonly attributed to ‘French Crab’

Uses:  Baking

History at Three Springs:  Planted for farmers markets and pastry chefs in the 2010's

The iconic logo of Apple Records originated in the compost heap of Mrs. Maria Ann Smith of Eastwood Australia. Having brought back 'French Crab' apples in the Sydney market, Mrs. Smith discarded the apple cores into her compost heap and from it emerged a seedling apple tree that would go on to bear the same green fruits we enjoy today. A bright, acidity variety, this one is best used for pies and other culinary ventures. The acidity does tend to mellow in storage.
